The Background

The concept of Nuit Blanche originated in France in 1984 and has since spread around the globe. Although the direct English translation for Nuit Blanche is ‘white night,’ the actual meaning in the context of this event is ‘a sleepless night,’ as festivities go on until the early morning.

Winnipeg hosted its first Nuit Blanche in September 2010.

Nuit Blanche Winnipeg is a free nighttime exploration and celebration of contemporary art that kick-starts Culture Days Manitoba. Artists, galleries, cultural organizations, and independent curators create and host their events around the city. The events and exhibits attract thousands of people each year. The staff of Culture Days Manitoba and the Nuit Blanche Winnipeg Committee organizes and oversee all aspects of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg each year.

The Opportunity

The Culture Days Manitoba and the Nuit Blanche Winnipeg Committee approached Relish to build a website that captured the unique and powerful creative energy and adventurous spirit of the night celebration and exploration of Manitoba’s Contemporary Art culture.

The website needed to be engaging, compelling, and interactive, providing the most comprehensive and accurate information and functionality for users to plan and experience the event properly.

The Solution

The primary development focus for Relish’s Development Team was creating a mobile responsive, interactive map for users to have all the information they needed instantly at their fingertips.

At the site’s hub, Relish’s Development Team built and installed a powerful interactive map featuring a unique filtering process that maintained speed while categorizing events, points of interest, venue profiles in the context of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg’s master schedule. Using this effective, flexible tool, users could easily and quickly plan and schedule their event experience on the go.

With the development work complete, Nuit Blanche Winnipeg launched a user-friendly, contemporary, artful, and highly interactive website that genuinely represented the event’s unique and wonderful spirit.
